The 2016 Christmas Tea ~ Come celebrate with us!

This is our favourite time of year at Lovejoy’s. We put up our Christmas village, set up the tree, decorate the tables, windows and walls, play Christmas music, and of course celebrate with all of you at our Christmas Tea!

The annual Christmas Tea is a Christmas themed Royal Tea.  It is served in four courses, an appetizer, tea sandwiches, mixed desserts, scones and a choice of one of our featured teas.  Like the peppermint tisane, the house Christmas blend, or another one of our seasonal special blends. Each year Heather & Hannah make all kinds of special desserts, some you’ve seen before, some new ones, but all are sure to please. This is a great time and we look forward to seeing you there.  Merry Christmas!

This years Christmas Tea will be on Sunday, December 11th.
The first seating will be at 12:30 and the second at 3:00.

Chowder Fest & Wine Walk ~ October 8th & 9th

Join us for the 6th annual Chowder Fest & Wine Walk!
& The Great Glass Float Giveaway!

If you have had our chowder, then you already know who has the best chowder in town, but almost every restaurant on the coast advertises that they have the best chowder in town, in the state, on the coast and even in the world (world, world ~ echoes for effect). Like most of you, I have tasted some that boast and should not, some that are fair, and some that we will never share!  But who deserves the title of best chowder in town?  Well, that’s where “You” and the Chowder Walk come in…

“We want the title, and we need you to tell the the good citizens of Florence where they can get the best chowder around!” (around, around… more dramatic effect)

How it works ~ For $5 you get a participation score card and map of all the participants in Old Town.  Then you simply make your rounds sampling all the entries and pick your favourite.  It’s that simple.

All Events Start at The Gazebo Park in the middle of Old Town Florence
The Wine Walk  – Starts at 2 pm Saturday, ends at 5 pm.
The Chowder Walk – Starts at 12 Noon on Sunday ends at 4 pm.
The Great Glass Float Giveaway – 4:15 on Sunday at Gazebo Park as well.

We hope to see you all on Sunday!

“Family Disaster Dogs” Book Signing ~ August 27th

Amber Higgins, author of Family Disaster Dogs will be at Lovejoy’s on August 27th between 1 and 3 pm.

Amber S. Higgins who spent over a decade breeding and training AKC bloodhounds for nationwide Search and Rescue FEMA volunteer work along with German shepherd dogs. Since 1976, Amber has dedicated her life to dogs. She is a certified and accomplished professional dog trainer, award-winning AKC breeder, and a show and pet grooming stylist. She is considered by many to be a dog expert and consultant. Amber currently owns a popular pet grooming spa on the Oregon coast.

What is a family disaster dog? It is your trained dog to rescue you! The Family Disaster Dog book shows you how easy a pet dog of any age, size, or breed can become your very own search and rescue dog! One of our biggest fears and chores during a disaster is losing or finding a loved one, and every dog has the ability to find its family members or friends. We, as dog owners, only need to learn how to use the natural ability of the dog to the full advantage during emergencies. As disasters and threats increase worldwide, we are asked to prepare for the worst in case rescuers cannot reach us quickly. With a family disaster dog in the household there is no need to wait for outside help to arrive to save your family and neighbors during a tornado, earthquake, or other emergency. This book will show you how to survive the worst and prepare. These fun and easy lessons are tailored for the family to learn rescue skills in the comfort of the home during daily activities.

We hope you will join us for the book signing and stick around for tea.

See you for tea!

“Min-Pei Fancy Oolong ~ A Tea Review

It’s difficult sometimes to venture out beyond our comfort zones, to go new places, to try new things, and especially to drink new teas.  So to help, we are venturing out, expanding our tea palates, and hopefully our review will help you decide what new teas your tea cup will brave…

The Process ~ Oolong tea is referred to as a “semi-fermented” tea that is grown in northern Wu Yi Mountains of China’s Fujian province and is a unique find.  After plucking the tea they let it wilt in the sunlight and then its shaken in bamboo baskets to slightly bruise the leafs.  This bruising helps the leaf react to the air and aids in the fermentation process. The leaf turns reddish during this process.  Once the desired fermentation period is achieved they fire the leaf to stop the fermentation.  This process produces a unique appearance and flavor…

The Review ~ I started with a small pot, and no sugar or cream.  As the cup fills, I smell the aroma. It’s very fragrant, and familiar. If I had to guess where this tea was made I would have guessed China, as the fragrance reminds me of a Chinese restaurant.  I couldn’t identify the aroma, but afterwards I read the natural flavor is similar to that of an orchid.

The color of the tea is bright amber, and the flavor is very distinct. It also has a natural sweetness to it.  I added two sugar cubes and found that I almost over did it.  I typically go for three.  While the color of the tea is very similar to my favorite “Scottish Breakfast” is much more flavorful, a mix between fruity and flowery. You can detect the fermentation straight away. The aroma convinced me to hold the cream.

I think this tea is pleasantly aromatic, and that if you like flowery teas you will enjoy it.  The added benefit of its natural sweetness may also help if your watching blood sugar levels.  While I don’t believe this will pair well with cream, you can always give it a try. The one other thing that I found with this tea, unlike most black teas I drink was that it did not seem to get stronger or more bitter while it steeped.  Although I love “Scottish Breakfast” I find that the longer I let it steep, the more bitter it becomes.

Liquor: Bright Amber
Sweetness: Naturally Mild Sweetness
Bitterness: Low
Aroma: Flowery (Orchid)
Taste: Fruity/Flowery, more pleasant as our palate adjust.
Cream: Not recommended
Sugar:  Not to much
Brewing Time: 3-4 Minutes
Temp: 190-205º F (Just short of a boil)

Lovejoy’s just received its order of Min-Pei Fancy Oolong, so if you fancy a cup we can brew it up!

Let us know your thoughts on this Fancy Oolong below.

February 14th, Valentines Day Dinner – Butter Chicken!

Authentic Indian food in Florence?   Please say it’s true!

Over the past several months some of you have had the privilege of joining us for a special evening dinner service.  In December we served an indian curry dish, spicy and mild, with an amazing lentil soup, chapati bread, and a mango ice-cream dessert.  In January we served chicken Korma, with homemade paratha bread (layered flat bread) a mango dessert.

The reviews have been amazing, and many of you have commented that this needs to be a regular service.  So, starting in February we will have two special dinner services a month.  Each dinner service will have its own special menu which we will announce in advance.  The dinner will include your choice of tea, an amazing main course, a side, and a handcrafted dessert made in house by our very own pâtissier.

We are thankful for all the positive feedback we have received, and we look forward to seeing you for tea… at dinner.

Dinner service will start at 5 pm, with the last seating at 7:30 pm.
Reservations are suggested.
